Here are some tips for sticking to your plan with food this summer:
🔖 Look at the menu before you go. If you’re going to be dining out, take a look at the menu before you visit the restaurant to narrow down your choices to the healthiest options while still selecting something that sounds yummy.
💧Hydrate! When you sit down for dinner, ask for water (with lemon if you like it) first and drink one full glass before you have anything else to eat or drink, including alcohol.
🥦 Start your dinner with greens. In my opinion, there is nothing more delicious or appealing than a fresh summer salad. The options are endless and it’s deliciously cold and light – perfect for a hot summer day. Try starting your meals with a salad instead of something heavier like bread or cheese. That way, you’re getting your greens in first and you won’t be starving for your entree.
🌽 Embrace seasonal cooking and eating. Grilling is also my favorite way to cook pretty much everything in the summer (bonus - you don’t heat up your already sweltering house with the oven/stove!). Choose some new-to-you but delicious looking produce at the grocery store or farmer’s market (you could even let your kids choose!) and make a hearty summer salad or throw it on the grill! Embrace local and seasonal food this summer and see where it takes you!
🍰🍸Pick your poison. Opt for dessert or alcohol. If the occasion calls for both (because sometimes they do!) try ordering a smaller dessert and sharing. Sometimes a little bit still hits the spot!
📝 Energize your shopping list. Make it a goal to try to incorporate all 20 of my Top Summer Foods this season! Tape it to your fridge and spend your summer adding in delicious, fresh summer staples.
✅ But most importantly, have fun! Summer brings so many food-related activities and outings. Strive for balance this summer but don’t deprive yourself in the name of being healthy. Enjoy all of summer’s delicious foods, just in moderation.
Soak up all the goodness of the joyful season and focus on what feels good inside and out. You'll never go wrong there!
