Our gut also plays a vital role in your mood, weight, skin, and ability to detoxify. With all that responsibility, our gut deserves some extra special care, as it is an ESSENTIAL piece of improving both our physical AND mental health.
Here are 3 simple ways you can care for your gut this week:
1. Reduce your stress.
- While it may seem like a stretch, stress actually wreaks havoc on our gut. If you’re already experiencing some of the sneaky symptoms we talked about last week – constant fatigue, inconsistent sleep habits, and/or anxiety/depression – stress is only going to hurt your gut and thrust these symptoms into overdrive.
- Stress helps bad bugs, like parasites, THRIVE in your body – the complete opposite of what you need!
So, how can you reduce some of your stress this week?
- What if you broke up some of your high intensity workouts with a walk, meditation break, or some yoga/stretching?
- Maybe you treat yourself to a bath and tea after a long day of work, or turn off the TV and curl up with a good book before bed?
- Give your body time and space to heal from the inside out.

2. Give your immune system a boost
- If your gut is in overdrive trying to repair itself, your immune system is also working hard to help heal your gut. Boosting your own body’s recovery mechanism will give your immune system a chance to lessen its already heavy load.
- Focus on adding foods like citrus fruits, garlic, and spinach. Add a grapefruit to your morning breakfast or make as spinach and egg white scramble with garlic!
- You can also boost your immune system by adding supplements like Vitamin B, Vitamin D, and Zinc.
3. Stay hydrated.
- An easy addition to your day can make a huge impact on your gut! Registered Dietician Gaby Vaca-Flores says staying hydrated can have a positive impact on the mucosal lining of the stomach and intestines.
- If getting in your water each day is a struggle, there are so many fun ways to boost hydration throughout the day.
- Buy a fun new water bottle as a motivator. Add a hydration packet to add some flavor and get in some much-needed electrolytes. Set a timer to drink water throughout the day.
- Don’t underestimate the power of hydration!
