The Tastes of Summer
Jul 01, 2025
There’s just something about summer that makes food feel more fun, right? Maybe it’s the juicy tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes. Or the way a fresh peach makes your whole kitchen smell like sunshine. Or maybe it’s just that life slows down a little, and suddenly dinner on the deck becomes the best part of the day.
This season isn’t about counting or cutting—it’s about enjoying. It’s about food that feels light, colorful, and energizing, not just “healthy.” Summer produce makes that so easy: berries by the handful, corn straight off the grill, herbs tossed on everything. You don’t need a meal plan—you need a big bowl and a little inspiration.
Here’s what I’m leaning into this season:
- Grilled everything. Fruit, veggies, protein, you name it. Grilling keeps things simple and flavorful—and keeps the heat outside where it belongs.
- Build-a-bowl meals. Mix and match whatever you’ve got—greens, grains, protein, fresh produce, dressing. Done.
- Big snacky platters. Hummus, sliced cucumbers, hard-boiled eggs, watermelon, nuts, a little cheese, a few crackers… basically adult Lunchables.
- “Eat the rainbow” energy. If it’s bright and fresh, it’s probably worth putting on your plate.
If you’re not already obsessed, let me introduce you to one of my favorite resources: The Real Food Dietitians. They make healthy recipes that actually fit how we live—picnic-friendly, weeknight doable, and totally delicious. Their summer recipes are packed with seasonal goodness (and won’t have you sweating over the stove).
I love that they are dietitians promoting eating real food that tastes good and is good for us! I’m loving their no bake, cold and refreshing Chickpea Cookie Dough Recipe as an afternoon sweet-treat, the Jennifer Aniston Salad which I know will be an easy summer staple, and delicious, easy Protein Pancakes Recipe that will make breakfast a breeze.
Summer is short. Don’t overthink it. Say yes to the beach day ice cream! Throw together a salad that makes you feel like you’re on vacation! Try to eat every one of my top 20 favorite healthy summer foods (see below)! Let this season be delicious and nourishing because it absolutely can be both.
