Busy? Do bare minimums first
Sep 17, 2024
How's September going so far?
When life feels chaotic and changes are coming at you from every direction, it's easy to fall into two common traps: 1) avoiding everything and just going through the motions, or 2) getting so caught up in tasks that you run on autopilot, ignoring your own needs.
But there’s a sweet spot between these extremes, and it starts with putting yourself first.
During unstable times, you need to have a few key habits that keep you grounded and centered—what I call your *bare minimums*. These are the non-negotiables that help you feel balanced, no matter what.
For me, it’s an early bedtime, scheduled movement, and having a grab-and-go breakfast ready. These simple habits make a big difference when everything else feels overwhelming.
Which habits tend to fall by the wayside when life gets busy... Your workouts, your solo morning time, planning meals? Whatever it is for you, these are the ones to prioritize.
Here’s how to make sure your *bare minimums* stay in place, even when things get hectic:
- Identify Your Essentials: Start by listing out the activities that make you feel grounded and calm. It might be a daily walk, a quiet cup of coffee in the morning, or a moment to journal. Choose the three that have the biggest positive impact on your mood and energy.
- Schedule Them In: Once you know your essentials, treat them like appointments. Put them on your calendar, set reminders, and make them non-negotiable. Protect this time as you would a meeting or a doctor’s appointment.
- Prepare Ahead of Time: Make it easy to stick to your bare minimums by preparing in advance. Lay out your workout clothes the night before, prep breakfast or snacks for the next day, or set a bedtime alarm to remind yourself to wind down.
- Communicate Your Needs: Let the people around you know what you’re doing and why it’s important. This way, they can support you, and you’re more likely to stay accountable. Whether it’s asking for some quiet time, sharing your calendar, or setting boundaries, don’t be afraid to communicate.
- Stay Flexible: Life happens, and some days won’t go as planned. That’s okay! If you miss one of your bare minimums, don’t beat yourself up—just get back to it the next day. The goal is consistency, not perfection.
Remember, these bare minimums are your anchors. By planning, preparing, and protecting this time, you create a solid foundation that keeps you grounded, no matter what life throws your way.
